Philippines to Boost Power Generation by 7,000 MW by 2025
DOE Targets 7,000 MW in Power Projects to Meet 2025 Energy Demand
The Department of Energy (DOE) has identified nearly 7,000 megawatts (MW) of power projects for completion by 2025, aiming to enhance energy sustainability, meet increasing electricity demand, and improve supply reliability while reducing environmental impacts.
According to DOE data, 6,841 MW of private sector-led projects are planned for this year, with most concentrated in Luzon. The region, where demand is expected to grow by 5.4% to 14,769 MW, will gain 3,923 MW of renewable energy projects—primarily solar—alongside 1,320 MW of natural gas and 500 MW of coal capacity to diversify its energy mix.
The Visayas, anticipating a 16% demand increase to 3,111 MW, will see 855 MW of new capacity, 846 MW of which will be solar. Mindanao, with an 8.2% demand growth to 2,789 MW, plans 232 MW of new projects, 176 MW of which are renewable energy initiatives.
To address rising peak electricity demand, the DOE is focusing on expanding power generation and diversifying sources, including solar, natural gas, and coal, to maintain energy reliability and support sustainability goals.
Energy Secretary Raphael P.M. Lotilla assured improvements in power supply this year, citing new generation capacity, expanded transmission lines, and advancements in energy storage systems (ESS) and battery energy storage systems (BESS). Luzon is set to add 230 MW of ESS and BESS capacity, while Mindanao plans 100 MW.
Efforts to improve power reliability in the Visayas, which relies on imports from Luzon and Mindanao, are also underway. The DOE emphasized that no power shortages are anticipated this year, even during the election period, due to infrastructure improvements by utilities and cooperatives.
